Nice town, but where do you find the coffee? Try to give a rating, ie 5 cups - The best you have ever had, down to one cup - Only if you are desperate (Please note, probably the majority of coffee outlets are 'uncuppable' and should not be even mentioned in the comments, ie Starbucks).

this irks me somewhat but you will need to go to a mccafe for a 2 star coffee which is the best coffee in newcastle or even gloria jeansong for a coffee
Although I'm not a coffee drinker myself - here are some suggestions for great places in Newcastle for coffee from an ex-newcastle girl.
1. Lime Cafe Bar and Restaurant - Glebe Rd The Junction
2. Longbench on Darby - Darby St Newcastle
3. Boogie Hole Cafe - Cnr Pacific & Hunter Sts Newcastle

phil, hire a car, drive up past maitland, take a left to Pokolbin, where you will find Bliss coffee - absolutely fantastic, about 40 mins drive from newcastle. this is a 5-cupper.
Roger
...mmm
Car hire = $95.00
Fuel say 10 litres @ $1.15 = $11.50
Extras = $10.00
Time 2 hours @ $35 per hour = $70
Cup of coffee = $3.50
Total = $189.50
Must be a darned good cup of coffee.:-)

A good friend tells me Goldbergs on Darby is a 5 cup for coffee and a 5 cup for a laid back atmosphere..........a little bit funky, quite different to Longbench which is very "clean".
D-Cup
We trained him in Perth and released him to the formerly quality-coffee-void that was Newcastle...call him Ben and ask him about Fremantle. You will find him and his spectacular coffee at 'III Bean' (That's '3' in Roman numerals) in Beaumont St, Hamilton (a suburb of the Newcastle region). He's a nice guy and he makes a mean coffee (nice juxtaposition!) - the minimalist modern decor also appeals.
I would like to agree with a lot of those sugestions.
Lime Bar 4 Cup
Longbench 4 Cup
IIIBean - 4 Cup (Ben is a great guy)
Being a "coffee snob" as well, I have have a number of other suggestions.
A couple more that have not been mentioned
R&R Cafe - Warners Bay - Great cup - 4-5cup
Avid Cafe - Greenshills - 3-4 cup (only good coffee in Maitland)
Peaberrys - New Lambton - 3-4 cup
The only 5 cup I have ever had was with Craig W on his great Rancilio machine - I'm due for another one soon Craig!!!!

You too kind Stick!.... I think I'm still yet to crack the "5 Cup" cup. I do however agree that we're overdue to have one together. Incidentally, you have me in pretty good company there...IIIBean. R&R, Avid!!!

Just thought I'd reopen the Newcastle Coffee Blog.
Let me say first that I run a coffee business so I may be biased or pig headed.
Suspension, Islington should get a mention - it is an espresso bar/roastery. My doppio ristrettos ar always 4.5 to 5 cup. But havent been there for a while.
Regarding best coffee in Maitland Oct 2005, I think you will find that Bunnings Cafe served the most consistent coffee then,yes that was my business but this is based on feedbak from customers not my opinion, now of course there is Real Coffee in Lorn. Again this is my place but feedback says that it is the best in Maitland. Now let me clarify this by saying that I am prepared to train any and all the cafes in Maitland and Newcastle to make great coffee. This is not an ad, just an observation. By the way I do not drink coffee out due to infernal disappointment.
Thanks for listening
James
