Coffee Blog - Australia - Sydney

Large city this yet for many years devoid of 3-5 cup establishments. Things have improved but on a per capita basis still lags a fair way behind Perth and Melbourne.

The trick is to know where to go......

There is a place called Chrysler that a friend of mine says is amazing. Also the place called Cafe Rosso in the Gallery Victoria is amazing. Make sure you get the guy to make your coffee. Easily a 5 cup.

In Chatswood there was a place called Pan D'Arte (not sure if it is still there). A woman named Lynne can make an amazing cup of coffee. Also 5 cup.

Also if you are after GJ's the one in Bondi Junction has a barrista who won the Gloria Jeans National Barrista competition. His name is Carston. Haven't drunk his coffee but I would be guessing around 5.

At the intersection of history, culture, ambience and taste lies Bar Coluzzi. Founded in the '60's by Italian immigrant and former boxing champion, Signor Coluzzi, you can sit on a crate on the footpath at the front and munch a brioche accompanied with a fantastic coffee. It is the only place I will ever consume a Robert Timms supplied roast of beans. Some Saturday mornings you may be fortunate to hear Signor Coluzzi dressed in his old-school hat and coat performing Italian arias from the stoop. 4 Cups for the coffee...4.5 Cups for the overall experience! 322 Victoria Rd, Darlinghurst.

I can confirm that Chrysler is a great place. When I worked in Sydney it was a frequent haunt for most of my workmates. It's in that little arcade that runs through from Pitt St Mall to King St. Can't remember what it's called sorry, but Bally is on one corner I think.

There was a Chrysler near where I am in Pitt St, but they used to burn the coffee.

Folks you have to try Cafe Mio in the Galleries Victoria building. it's a little orange hole in the wall but it serves a cap to die for. Right strength, right temp - ask for Jim to make it for you.

If you want something with a little spice - try the Max Brenners in DJ's just off the Centrepoint Eatry. The Mexican Hot Chocolate has chilli powder through and it is certain to put chairs on your hest... err, hairs on your chest - and then rip 'em straight back off again!

Books down in Erskinville is quite good. There is also a place called Pick and Chews also in Erskinville. My younger brother Dominic works there and I've heard he is good.

1. Four Olives Deli - Manly.
2. Bar Italia - Norton Street Leichhardt.
3. Michel's Patisserie - Allambie Heights.
Say no more.
Most other reasonable cafes can console themselves with having a great view.
There is, however, an undeniable and regrettable rapid spread of some of those "gourmet coffee" chain stores who shall remain nameless on this blog - unless you name them.
Speaking as a Sydney sider I can only apologise and hang my head in shame and think it must be something to do with the criminality of our early settlers.
In some countries you could go to jail for calling it coffee.

Hey all, if you want the best in Sydney then Campos Coffee in Newtown cannot be beaten. Campos raise coffee up to a level that the before mentioned establishments can't even dream of competing against. Campos use their own fresh roasted coffee and use the ultimate espresso machines in the market (PID'ed La Marzocco Lineas and Mazzer Roburs). Each flat white will be served with latte art as standard and the owner Will Young really knows his stuff. You might even notice that while you are there, Paul Bassett (2003 World Barista Champion) will drop in for a coffee. The other places worth visiting although not quite on the same level would be Single Origin, Allpress Espresso and Toby's Estate.

found myself in sydney on thursday morning and ventured down the street from my hotel to Doppio on pitt st. very ordinary experience, my medium macchiato came out as a bland long black with a dash. The barista seemed onto it but maybe just failed to interpret what i wanted. The egg on toast was over done, although the orange juice was good.
also, when in Parkes, central west NSW, try a cup of instant coffee at the moonraker motel, at only $2.50 per cup its to die for, just like their bright red shag pile carpet.

I agree with Ruby MOS Cafe is to die for (perhaps we worked in the same building). There's also a cafe on George St opposite Grosvenor Place (the new one of the 2 not the one there longer) that is made with love.

I will now go to see if there is a London Coffee blog, for in London, there are only 2 real places to get real coffee and one of those makes a flat white....

Hey all, a new place has just opened in Sydney called Mecca. Very much worth visiting, their coffee machine is a custom handcrafted machine made only in small numbers by an artisan coffee machine builder. They have a custom blend of coffee by Rio Coffee Roasters in SA. They also have a very talented team of Baristas. Check them out if you're in Sydney.

Know the name of the guy who makes your coffee"... I only remember them if the make me a good one.

Pablo & Rustys - Gordon - Opposite Gordon Train Station, ideal a.m. first coffee of the day, perfect crema, perfect bean - the bean that baristas ask for when entering comp's. Excellent single origin and blends, roasted with love - never burnt, never dried.

Doltone House, Taren Point, - Best Ristretto I have ever had.

Toast, Cnr Mary St - Surry Hills,

Surry Hills and Leichart are peppered with excellent boutique beans houses and baristas.

OK.. Must add a new category "MOST SURPRISINGLY GOOD COFFEE FROM A DODGY FAST FOOD OUTLET" Sandwich City - Lane Cove Road, North Ryde, Sydney. Definitely no ambiance - but if you liver is fribulating for a fix - you can get one here... they have been known to heat their gravy using the coffee machine - but don't let that put you off. Coffee is what I would call adequate (not bad enough to solicit a complaint - not great enough to solicit dilerium), but good enough to get you back again.
