Massive, wonderful city however good brew is far harder to find than one would assume. Tons of chains Nero, Starbucks et al. Yet where is the real coffee??
My favourite so far, [until the cultured Londoners begin to comment] is Carluccios at Market place [off Oxford]...but now they are all over the place.
Welcome to a new blog initiative....The coffee search engine for travellers....We will, over the next few years, be listing increasing numbers of cities with direct links to the post on that city. This will keep reviews current as it will be easy to add more thoughts whenever anyone makes a discovery. Hopefully this will be a great resource for the on the road coffee-driven blogee.
I will however 'clean up' the comments as not all have stayed with the subject or even worse recommended stuff like.....'The coffee outside Coles.....'. Allowing such comments to remain will of course lower the overall effectiveness and snob appeal of said post.....
Try to give a rating, ie 5 cups - The best you have ever had, down to one cup, ie, only if you are desperate. (Please note, probably the majority of coffee outlets are 'uncuppable' and should not be even mentioned in the comments, ie Starbucks etc.).
Large city this yet for many years devoid of 3-5 cup establishments. Things have improved but on a per capita basis still lags a fair way behind Perth and Melbourne.
The trick is to know where to go......
As you can see from the 'Phil is speaking' sidebar, I will be in Europe next week. We are running a 500+ conference and then I am speaking at a leaders gathering in Randers nr Arhus, Denmark before heading for Malmo Sweden to be with this church on the weekend of the 25th. [I hope they speak english as well]
Now does anyone know where the best coffee is at any of these locations?????
Well it is official...Vancouver is my favourite city. Stayed last night downtown and early in the morning ran the sea wall around Stanley Park....then after a coffee...By the way I think I found the city's best cafe....I walked the town..West end, Robson st, Granville Island and markets...bought some wild boar and blueberry terrine...the gallery area...trees orange, waterways smooth as glass, mountains touched by snow...from downtown you can be on the top of the mountain ready to ski down in 30 minutes and the fields are floodlit open to 11 pm.
The online Australian coffee magazine. Mainly Sydney and Melbourne...... still it's a start.
A couple of blogee's were having a discussion in the comments section a few posts ago about the quality of coffee. They raised the question of the subjectivity of it all. The same is of course true for music, food, poetry indeed everthing else.
I think it interesting that there is a 'better'. That a fine Lafite Rothschild is superior to a cheap Rioja not just because the experts say it is but the majority of people, given the chance to drink both, would agree. Aristotle said that the excellent becomes the permanent in that once it is experienced it is never forgotten. We have this innate ability to recognise quality. Tha same is true for the awareness of right and wrong. I wonder where it all comes from? I wonder where it is all meant to lead?
Perhaps because we were created by He who is wonderful, we hear his echoes everywhere.
